High-Pressure Gas Thermionic Diodes

The trade names Tungar and Rectigon are applied to high-pressure gas diodes. They are used extensively for charging small storage-battery installations in telephone central offices. The cathodes are massive tungsten or thoriated-tungsten filaments, and they are close to a heavy graphite anode. Argon gas at a pressure of about 5 centimeters of mercury fills the tube. The gas prevents rapid evaporation of the hot filament and also reduces the space charge.
