Types of Telephone SystemsClassified on the basis of the method of switching the telephone subscriber lines, telephone systems are either manual systems or dial systems. In the manual system the switching is done by telephone operators.ref.1These systems will be considered in the first part of this chapter, and dial systems will be considered in the last part. Manual telephone systems are of two general types, local-battery systems and common-battery systems. A hand-operated generator or magneto is used in signaling in the local-battery system; hence, the designation magneto telephone system, or magneto local-battery telephone system.
