Modulation

This is the process whereby the information in the modulating low-frequency signal wave is translated to the desired radio-frequency band (page 414). By the use of different assigned carrier frequencies, the information to be transmitted by various radio transmitters can be raised to different locations in the radio spectrum. Thus, many radio signals can be transmitted simultaneously through space, and the desired signal can be selected on a frequency basis at the receiving station.

Many types of modulation are possible, and several different systems are in use. These sometimes are classified2 as follows: amplitude modulation; angle modulation (which includes frequency modulation and phase modulation) ; and pulse modulation.
