The domain of the square function is the set R of all real numbers. The range is the interval [0, ∞) of all nonnegative reals.

Both the domain and the range of the reciprocal function are equal to the set of all real x such that x ≠ 0.

When a function is described by a rule, it is understood that the domain is the set of all real numbers for which the rule is meaningful.

EXAMPLE 3 (Continued)

The function h given by the rule

h(t) = t3 + 1

has the whole real line as its domain and as its range.
