Example 1: Functions Without Maximum or Minimum

Each of the following functions, graphed in Figure 3.5.2, have no maximum and no minimum:

(a)   f(x) = f/x, 0<x.

(b)   f(x) = x2, 0 < x < 1.

(c)   f(x) = 2x + 3.
