Example 5: Vector and Scalar Equation For a Plane

Find the vector and scalar equations for the plane with position and normal vectors

P = 3i - j - 2k, N = i + j + 4k.

We first compute N · P,

N · P = 1 · 3 + 1 · (-1) + 4 · (-2)= -6.

A vector equation is

(i + j + 4k) · X = -6.

A scalar equation is

x + y + 4z = -6.

The plane is shown in Figure 10.5.6.
