Foods and Their Water Content

We take in approx. 1 litre of water along with our food each day.

The more water a certain food contains, the less energy it contains, since on its own water has no calorific value.

Fruits, vegetables, fish, milk and crustacean consist of up to 3/4 water.

Poultry, meat and sausages contain more than 50% water.

Bread and pastry and eggs consist of 25-50% water.

Cereals, pulses, butter, nuts, chocolate, fats and oils contain the most energy. They are made up of less than 25% water.

How Much Water Does a Potato Contain?

Material:
Corer
Potato

Procedure:

Punch out a piece of potato with the corer and cut that piece straight at the front and the back. Weigh the piece and store it on the radiator or in the sun. When it has stopped changing, weigh it again.

How Much Water Does an Egg Contain?

Procedure:

Weigh the egg and let an adult help you remove the hard egg-shell:
Left: For this purpose, you have to dip the egg alternately into 10% hydrochloric acid and rinse off the foam under running water.
Middle: Handle the egg without the shell very carefully, so that the delicate skin doesn’t break. Weigh it and keep it in a warm place (e.g. on a radiator).

As soon as it does not change anymore, weigh it again.
