Types of Losses

Only a part of the mechanical power required to drive a generator is available as useful electric power at the generator terminals. The difference between the power input and the power output is lost in the generator in the following four ways:

1. I2fRf loss in the shunt-field winding.

2. I2aRa loss in the armature circuit.

3. Friction loss (bearings, brushes, windage).

4. Hysteresis and eddy-current loss in armature iron.
