Sudan (As Sudd Swamp)

Gemini 6 photograph of As Sudd in the upper Nile province of the Sudan. Sudd is Arabic for barrier. This region is the world's biggest swamp, larger than the state of Pennsylvania. The White Nile flows into the labyrinth of marshes and papyrus grass and loses over 80 percent of its volume before emerging. The bright area near the lower left-center is the reflection of the Sun off the swamp. The image is about 500 km across and north is up. (Gemini 6A, S65-63161
