Mars
Tithonium And Ius Chasma, Valles Marineris

Layers can be clearly seen in the canyon wall in this image of Iu and western Tithonium Chasma, parts of the giant Valles Marineris canyon system on Mars. About 80 layers varying in thickness from 5 to 50 meters are visible in the triangular cliff at the top center of the image. The cliff is over 1 km high, the layering indicates a complex geologic history for Valles Marineris in particular and early Mars in general. The image was taken at about 5:00 p.m. local solar time. The imaged area is near 7 S, 90 W at the western end of Vallis Marineris and is approximately 8 km across. North is at 11:00. (Mars Global Surveyor, MRPS85523)
