Radio Wave Propagation and Antennas

Wireless, or radio, communication has been used commercially since about 1900. This form of communication makes possible telephone and telegraph service between moving objects such as motor vehicles, trains, ships at sea, or aircraft in flight, and between locations separated by natural barriers such as oceans or extensive mountain ranges. This chapter and the following chapter will discuss radio communication.

Radio wave propagation is defined1 as "the transfer of energy by electromagnetic radiation at radio frequencies." Radio frequency is defined1 as a frequency "at which electromagnetic radiation of energy is useful for communication purposes."
