Example 3: Sketching a Plane with d = 0

Sketch the plane x + 2y - z = 0.

 

Step 1

The plane passes through the origin because (0, 0, 0) is a solution of the equation.

Find another point where x = 0 and a third point where y or z = 0,

x = 0, y =1, z = 2,

x = 1, y = 0, z =1.

Step 2

Connect the points

(0, 0, 0),

(0, 1, 2),

(1, 0, 1)

to form a triangle which lies in the plane, as in Figure 10.5.4.
