Second Partial Derivatives

Given a function z = f(x, y) of two variables, the partial derivatives fx(x, y) and fy(x, y) may themselves be differentiated with respect to either x or y. Thus there are four possible second partial derivatives. Here they are.

Twice with respect to x:

fxx, or11_partial_differentiation-517.gif

Twice with respect to y:

fyy, or11_partial_differentiation-518.gif

First with respect to x and then with respect to y:

(fx)y = fxy, or 11_partial_differentiation-519.gif

First with respect to y and then with respect to x:

(fy)x = fyx, or 11_partial_differentiation-520.gif

Similar notation is used for three or more variables and for higher partial derivatives.
