Direct Drive and Gear-Head Motors

Author: E.E. Kimberly

Direct connection of a motor to its load through a rigid shaft coupling or a cushioning flexible coupling is most desirable if the rated motor speed is not too much higher than that of the shaft to be driven. Specially designed motors are available for unit assembly with the driven machine. If the rated speed of the motor relative to the driven shaft is too high, a geared-head unit with motor and gear reduction assembled together may be had.
