The Single-Phase Induction Motor

A polyphase squirrel-cage induction motor connected to a single-phase line of its rated voltage and frequency will develop no starting torque; but, having been started in either direction by some external means, such a motor will perform approximately with polyphase-motor characteristics. The single-phase induction motor is seldom wound with the distributed lap type of winding, as in Fig. 18-5, but usually has a concentric type, as in Fig. 21-1.
