The Moon
Astronaut Setting Up Scientific Experiments Package On The The Moon

Astronaut Edwin Aldrin setting up the seismometer, part of the Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package (EASEP) on the lunar surface. All the Apollo missions which landed on the Moon set up scientific experiments, including seismometers, magnetometer, laser retroflectors and solar wind analyzers. These experiments ran until they were turned off in 1977, and sent back critical information on the state of the Moon. Neil Armstrong took this picture, which shows the Lunar Module and American flag in the background. (Apollo 11, AS11-40-5949)
