Armature-Iron Loss

Author: E.E. Kimberly

The reversal of flux in the armature iron because of its turning produces a hysteresis loss, as explained on page 64. Eddy currents also arc set up in the iron, as explained on page 66. Both hysteresis and eddy currents cause power loss, and therefore affect the efficiency of the machine. Hysteresis losses are approximately proportional to the 1.6 power of the maximum flux density, and eddy-current losses are proportional to the square of the maximum flux density.
