2-Core Saturable Reactor

The disadvantages of unsymmetrical current wave form and the need for a choke in the control circuit are overcome in the 2-core saturable reactor of Fig. 7-8(a), or its equivalent of Fig. 7-8(b). The 2-core reactor is comprised essentially of two identical transformers, I and II, each having a control winding of Nc turns and an output winding or gate winding of NG turns. The control windings, energized from a d-c source, are connected in series with each other and with their polarities relative to those of the gate windings so that the fundamental component of the voltages, induced in them by the current in the gate windings, cancel. The gate windings may be connected in parallel with each other or in series with each other.
