Only a few atoms of darmstadtium have ever been made, initially through a nuclear fusion of lead and nickel (at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, GSI, in Darmstadt):

208Pb + 62Ni 269Ds + 1 n

The IUPAC recognised the GSI team as discoverers in their 2001 report. Hence the new element was officially named darmstadtium in 2003.
