The Solubility of Edible Oil

Study of the solubility of edible oil

Apparatus: 2 test tubes, 2 stoppers

Chemicals: Oil, benzine, water

Procedure:

  • Pour 1 ml benzine into the first test tube, and 1 ml water into the second.
  • Close both test tubes with a stopper. Shake both tubes and watch!

Observation:

With water, an emulsion is formed, which again separates into an oil and a water phase after 1-2 minutes. With benzine, the oil is very miscible.

Analysis and Evaluation:

  • Oils dissolve in lipophilic (fat-soluble) solvents.
  • They do not dissolve in hydrophilic (water-soluble) solvents like water.

Therefore, it is possible do remove fat stains with petrol.
