A Simple Proof of Fats

Grease Mark Test

Utensils: writing paper, cotton tips

Chemicals: fats, fat oils, fat foods

Procedure:

    • With the help of the cotton tips, dab different oils and fats on a piece of writing paper.
    • Mash fat foods between the paper

Observation:

Permanent grease marks show on the paper, which can be seen particularly well, when the piece of paper is held up to the sunlight.

Analysis and Evaluation:

Oils and fats have very high boiling points, and they are not able to evaporate in the air like water. Therefore, they leave permanent traces on paper.
